The Need

Our hospital has served generations of families in the Tennessee Valley since 1895. As the second largest hospital in Alabama, Huntsville Hospital is the regional referral center for North Alabama and south central Tennessee, providing high-quality health care for a service area of more than 1.1 million people, regardless of their ability to pay.

As a not-for-profit regional hospital that receives no city, state or federal tax support, Huntsville Hospital relies on philanthropy to fund its capital and operational needs. From funding high-touch programs like Arts in Medicine and Music Therapy, to investing in high-tech equipment for hospital departments, Foundation dollars ensure that Huntsville Hospital is able to continue meeting the needs of our growing community.

In order to meet the needs of our growing region, North Alabama residents must have access to:

  • world-class facilities

  • skilled caregivers

  • specialized programs

  • advanced technologies

We are counting on you!
Join the vision as we position our hospitals for the future.

There is a need. And, with your support, we can continue meeting the needs of patients across our region.

Why give to Huntsville Hospital?

  • Huntsville Hospital’s vital importance is being demonstrated daily throughout the pandemic. We must be ready for all health crises that befall our community.

  • Huntsville Hospital has been a major part of this community since 1895 and will continue to be. Huntsville Hospital is one of the top 10 largest publicly-owned hospital systems in the United States. It is our city’s largest private employer.

  • Growth is critical to the success of Huntsville Hospital in order to attract the necessary physicians and specialties that provide local access to worldclass medical care.

  • The physicians and staff at Huntsville Hospital strive to deliver care efficiently. Huntsville Hospital is in the 15th percentile nationally in the cost to deliver care.

  • Huntsville Hospital is the community’s only non-profit hospital. Yet it is financially independent and receives no city, state or federal tax support.

  • Huntsville Hospital is our community’s public health entity, providing $70M in indigent care each year.

  • About half of the hospital’s patients are on Medicare. Because of the Medicare wage index in Alabama, the hospital’s reimbursements are lower than they are for neighboring states yet expenses are the same.

  • Medicaid patients make up about 15% of the hospital’s business. For these patients, the hospital receives about 70 cents for every dollar spent.

Because of donor support, Huntsville Hospital continues to provide the level of care our growing region needs, close to home.

Huntsville Hospital is home to:
  • One of only three Trauma Centers in Alabama
  • A very busy Labor and Delivery department! More babies are delivered here than any other hospital in the state.
  • The busiest Emergency Room in the state
  • The region’s only Pediatric ER and Obstetric Emergency Department
  • A regional Neonatal ICU, caring for more than 1,000 babies annually
  • The busiest Cardiac Cath Lab in the state
  • One of the largest Pathology labs in the country
  • The largest single-site mammography center in the state
  • One of only eight St. Jude affiliate clinics in the country
  • The only inpatient hospice facility in Madison County, and largest of its kind in North Alabama

All of our patients and their families are impacted by technology made possible by Foundation donors. When you attend a Foundation event or donate, you are investing in the future of health care in Huntsville.
