One gift, eight times the impact

“I am happy that I have this opportunity to give something that will contribute to the care of future patients, and I know that Peter would be pleased with this choice as well.”

Diane Wick

During his 40 years practicing anesthesia in Huntsville, Dr. Peter Wick became known not only for his dedicated service, but also for his skill in finding difficult veins — a legacy his wife, Diane, has chosen to carry forward.

Her recent gift to Huntsville Hospital Foundation funded the purchase of eight new vein viewers now serving patients across our hospitals — technology that truly reflects Dr. Wick’s life’s work and the compassion he was known for.

“When Peter was first brought to the emergency room at the onset of his final health crisis, he was sitting on the bed covered in blood while a young nurse struggled to find his vein," Diane shared. "Since he had a reputation for being the one who could find a difficult or rolling vein when he was working, this was particularly upsetting to me."

That memory strengthened her resolve to meet this important hospital need. Vein viewer technology allows caregivers to find veins quickly and accurately, sparing patients the pain and stress of repeated needle sticks. It will also serve as a valuable tool in training newer staff — something Dr. Wick, known for sharing his skills with colleagues, deeply valued.

“The vein viewer will help ensure that future patients will not have to endure the pain of multiple sticks preceding a medical procedure," Diane said. "I believe this gift is particularly appropriate to be given in his memory."

“I am happy that I have this opportunity to give something that will contribute to the care of future patients, and I know that Peter would be pleased with this choice as well.”

Because of Diane's generosity, thousands of patients will now experience more comfortable, compassionate care — a legacy truly worthy of Dr. Wick’s name.
